EndNote Basic (Online)

EndNote Basic, formerly EndNote Web and also referred to as EndNote Online, is free for anyone to use.

Create an Account

Click SIGN UP FOR AN ACCOUNT
Enter the required information on the left hand side of the menu, including a Login Name and Password
Read terms and click I AGREE

Using EndNote Basic from Off Campus (Roaming Access)

In order to use EndNote Basic off-campus, you must first register and login from an IP authenticated workstation. After twelve months, you are required to login again from an IP authenticated workstation to re-establish your affiliation with UW-Madison and to restore access to styles, filters and online connections. If your account was set up at a different institution, contact ISI to change your affiliation to UW-Madison.

Access Web of Science from a campus computer
Click SIGN IN in the horizontal menu at the top of the page
Enter your EndNote Basic login and password
You will know you have signed in if you see “Signed In” in the horizontal menu at the top
Click ENDNOTE on the top menu to access your account. This resets your roaming access for one year
Click the OPTIONS tab, then click ACCOUNT INFORMATION to track your roaming access

Purchasing EndNote Desktop

The most current version is EndNote 20. There are several methods to purchase and EndNote license:

Individual licenses are available on the EndNote website, and they offer a deep student discount. Discounts are also available if you are upgrading from an older version of EndNote.
Faculty and Staff can get a smaller discount from the OnTheHub eStore.

Installing EndNote Desktop

Select Custom when installing EndNote so that you can choose to install:

Additional Connection Files
Additional Import Filters
Additional Bibliographical Output Styles

Before adding references to your EndNote Library, Import Journal Lists in order to enable journal abbreviations.

Open you Endnote library and go to the Library menu –> Define Term Lists. The Term Lists window will open.
Select the Journals, then Import List.
A window should open containing a variety of subject-oriented term lists. If you are not taken to the folder with the Term Lists automatically, they are locate in the EndNote application folder –> Terms.
Select any term lists that are related to your research. You can import as many Term Lists as you’d like, but they must be added one at a time.

Note: If you already have citations in your EndNote Library, you must first delete any existing term lists before completing the steps above.

Customizing EndNote for UW-Madison

1. For version EndNote X3 and newer, users can set up their software so EndNote can find full text of article using UW-Madison’s Library subscriptions.

Open your EndNote Library
Click Edit, then click Preferences (On a Mac it is under the EndNote menu)
Click Urls & Links on the left side of the Preferences window
In the Open URL Arguments box, replace =ISI:WOS with =ISI:endnote in “?sid=ISI:WOS&…”
Click Find Full Text on the left side of the Preferences window.
In the OpenURL Path box, enter:
https://uwi-primoalma-prod.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/openurl/WISC/wisc_services_page?
(The trailing question mark must be included!)
In the Authenticate with URL box, enter:
https://ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/login?url=https://www.library.wisc.edu/
Click OK

2. Downloading and Installing UW-Madison Connection File to to search and import references from the UW-Madison Library Catalog:

Under the Online Search group within the left side Group Pane within EndNote, click the More… option
Locate the connection file for U Wisconsin-Madison.
Select it and click Choose.
Now U Wisconsin-Madison will show up as an option under Online Search

Download a copy from Software Centre

Open Software Centre on your staff computer.
Type EndNote into the search box at the top and click Enter.
Click the EndNote icon.
Click Install.

Download a copy from StaffNet

Log into StaffNet.
Type EndNote into the search box at the top and click Enter.
Click on EndNote in the results list where the link is staffnet.cqu.edu.au/our-uni/departments/iatd/Pages/EndNote.aspx.
Read the License Terms and Conditions of Use. You are agreeing to these terms and conditions when you download the software.
Download and install the software:
- Windows
  - Download the zip file.
  - Extract the files.
  - Run the installation file as an administrator.
- Mac
  - Download the dmg file
  - Double click the dmg file to open the installer
  - Follow the prompts to install EndNote.
